Hand-Painted Furniture Guide

At The Pier, we like our special finds to tell their own story and nowhere is this more obvious than with our hand-painted furniture on which virtually every panel is exquisitely hand-painted to tell a tale or to show meaning through auspicious symbols. Hand-painted furniture started with the Chinese who discovered how to use resin lacquer over 3,000 years ago. The skills to produce these fine paintings have been passed from generation to generation and are a highly regarded art form giving hand-painted furniture its special and unique appeal.

In almost all hand-painted furniture the Chinese use carefully chosen symbols such as animals, plants, clouds and water to tell a story. The choice of these symbols in hand-painted furniture is never random - each has its appropriate use and meaning, for instance, the crane for longevity; the peony flower to symbolise happy marriage and the cherry blossom for love. To the ancient Chinese, many of whom were unable to read or write, these symbols created a common visual vocabulary, far more understandable than words.

Our hand-painted furniture ranges are inspired by the highly decorated antique cabinets used by affluent Chinese families over two hundred years ago, as well as by the exotic decorative heritage of lands such as Indonesia and Tibet. Whether you choose a co-ordinated range or just one piece of hand-painted furniture you will bring rich, vibrant colours and textures into your home and take pleasure from owning a beautiful piece that continues to celebrate centuries of tradition and skill.

Care of our hand-painted furniture

 • Keep furniture away from heat sources to prevent warping and splitting.

 • Clean with a moist soft cloth and dry immediately.

 • Liquid spills should be removed immediately to avoid staining.

 • Do not use wax polishes on furniture which has a protective lacquer or varnished finish.

 • Wax-finished products can be re-waxed occasionally.
 •
Important - Have you checked your measurements?
This is stating the obvious, we know, but particularly when ordering larger items (wardrobes etc) it is important that you carefully measure both the ultimate location of the item and ALSO whether it can be manoeuvred through doors and hallways to get to its destination. If you have narrow doorways or a staircase with tight corners, please be sure to check again and get in touch with us if there's a problem.
