Mirrors Guide

Wall mirrors are both important household items and decorative objects at the same time. The Venetians discovered how to make mirrors in the 16th century and took their skills with them across Europe so that every fine house soon boasted at least one decorative mirror, not to mention the Palace at Versailles which created wonderment with its sheer profusion of wall mirrors. Thanks to 17th century Russia which believed mirrors were a sin and banned them, superstitions quickly grew. Break a mirror and you must apologise to it, then bury it deep in the garden! Soldiers took mirror-talismen into battle to reflect back death and people in northern India believed it was bad luck to look into someone else's wall mirror in case you left part of your soul trapped there.

Thankfully we've moved on and today mirrors are seen as a fantastic decorative tool, expanding narrow hallways, drawing sunlight into a dark room and creating a sense of space. Wall mirrors are often used in the ancient Chinese practice of feng shui where the reflections are prized for harmonising and balancing the flow of energy and certain decorative mirror frames are shaped in the symbols of luck, health and wealth.

At The Pier, our decorative mirrors are sourced from around the world and reflect different cultures and lifestyles. Made by craftsmen using local skills and an amazing variety of materials they will create light and life in any room. We've got wall mirrors framed with delicate mother–of-pearl or bold metal filigree; mirrors surrounded with intricately carved wood, sparkling mosaic or a patchwork of beautiful Indian fabrics. Use our decorative mirrors to reflect something you want to see more of - the garden, trees or light - and to bring unusual and beautiful decorative qualities to any room. Hang two identical mirrors side by side for a bold decorative focus or mix several different shapes together like a patchwork on a large wall. Our wall mirrors will inspire you, whatever you choose!

Care instructions

Some decorative mirrors may have delicate frames which can be damaged by normal glass cleaners. Instead of spraying cleaner directly on the mirror's surface, spray it onto a soft, grit-free cloth and then wipe the surface. Never use an abrasive cleaner or steel wool to remove tough spots as this will scratch the glass. Instead, simply remoisten your cloth and continue rubbing gently.
