Bedroom Furniture Guide

Our bedroom should be a sanctuary - a place to sleep, dream and relax. So it goes without saying that our choice of bedroom furniture is the key to creating the perfect comfort zone.

Taking inspiration from around the world our bedroom designs range from intricately carved Indonesian bedroom furniture to the simplicity of a Shaker-influenced American cherry wood bedroom; from elaborately hand-painted lacquered Oriental bedroom furniture to the clean lines of our classic solid oak bedroom ranges.

Such is the importance and symbolism of the bedroom that for centuries it has been wrapped in folklore and traditions the world over. At The Pier, we love collecting these stories! Oriental bedroom furniture will never feature crossed bars as these were believed to signify the splitting of a married couple; Turkish bedrooms were always havens of opulence and the word 'divan' comes from the Turkish council meetings held on low-lying platforms and cushions; Egyptian pharaohs loved their bedroom furniture so much that even at the end they took it with them to their burial chambers; Indian bedrooms usually feature an image of their God opposite the bed to be the first thing seen on waking.

Whatever your style, we've got bedroom furniture for you. Our decorative Oriental bedroom furniture is hand-painted and lacquered, featuring symbolic imagery of birds and flowers and will make a strong statement in any room. Each panel takes an accomplished artist over a day to make. For a rustic look try our Mexican-style solid pine bedroom furniture which is wonderfully warm and chunky. We've got refreshingly airy white bedroom furniture and a more traditional hand-carved bedroom inspired by traditional Indonesian designs - and plenty of bedroom ranges in between. And most of our bedroom furniture comes pre-assembled so you can forget about screwdrivers and instructions!

As well as the design of our bedroom furniture, it's the wood we choose for each design, whether solid or veneer, which makes the difference. Here's why:

Birch

Ancient people called it the 'mother tree' because of its ability to grow in inhospitable terrain. Through its yearly leaf fall it would then create a rich new habitat in which other trees flourished. Fine-grained and with an attractive sheen, it's easy to see why we use birch in our bedroom furniture and not just because Native Americans believe it gives the essence of truth! This hard, durable wood is often rippled with attractive dark streaks and lines making it valuable as a veneer.

Oak

Known as the 'king of trees' oak produces a very durable hardwood that has been used for centuries in the construction of famous buildings and also furniture. The beauty of solid oak for bedroom furniture is due to its natural variations in colour and grain - giving a pleasing, unique finish that can only get better with time. We use oak in our Veneto and Enise bedroom collections.

Pine

Pine is used extensively in the manufacture of bedroom furniture and it's easy to see why. With its even grain, warm colouring, unique knots and amazing durability, it's a fantastically versatile material for creating bedroom furniture of many designs and colours. We use many varieties of pine in our various bedroom ranges including Java, Malang and Rio Grande.

Care of our wooden bedroom furniture

All woods will mellow and darken in natural light and this is more noticeable on lighter finishes.

  • Keep furniture away from heat sources to prevent warping and splitting.

  • Clean with a moist soft cloth and dry immediately.

  • Liquid spills should be removed immediately to avoid staining.

  • Do not use wax polishes on bedroom furniture which has a protective lacquer or varnished finish.

  • Wax-finished products can be re-waxed occasionally.
  • Important - Have you checked your measurements?

This is stating the obvious, we know, but particularly when ordering larger items (wardrobes etc) it is important that you carefully measure both the ultimate location of the item and ALSO whether it can be manoeuvred through doors and hallways to get to its destination. If you have narrow doorways or a staircase with tight corners, please be sure to check again and get in touch with us if there's a problem.
