Asian Furniture Guide

View our range of Asian furniture

The sheer geographic breadth of Asia is such that it might seem ambitious to pull under the umbrella of Asian furniture every cabinet from Sri Lanka, trunk from Bhutan and table from India. It's true the cultural heritage, religious influences and people are gloriously varied, but we think there is a strong connection between all these furniture traditions. Asian furniture has a calm beauty; an elegant style and a sense of history that easily fits into any decorating style today. Whether hand-carved in the exotic tropical sengon or meranti woods, hand-painted using traditional techniques or handwoven from water hyacinth, all our Asian furniture comes to you through a wealth of skill and tradition that has been passed down by generations. Many of our pieces are inspired by the antique designs we've found in Asian culture and these pieces of Asian furniture are bound up with stories and ceremonial meanings which give them an intrinsic beauty that is unique.

We also believe in function! This is why we work with the local craftspeople to create traditionally inspired furniture that works with the modern lifestyle. At first glance you'd never guess that many of our beautifully crafted pieces of Asian furniture are also TV stands, computer desks and music cabinets. The marriage of old skills with modern day use is one of our passions and nowhere is it more evident than in our Asian furniture ranges.

Care of our Asian furniture

All woods will mellow and darken in natural light and this is more noticeable on lighter finishes. Bear this in mind if you keep any objects on a surface for extended periods as they will also leave areas of lighter wood.

  • Keep furniture away from heat sources to prevent warping and splitting.

  • Clean with a moist soft cloth and dry immediately.

  • Liquid spills should be removed immediately to avoid staining.

  • Always use tablemats and coasters when dining.

  • Do not use wax polishes on furniture which has a protective lacquer or varnished finish.

  • Wax-finished products can be re-waxed occasionally.

  • Use teak oil on outdoor furniture at the beginning and end of each summer season.
  • Important - Have you checked your measurements?

This is stating the obvious, we know, but particularly when ordering larger items (wardrobes etc) it is important that you carefully measure both the ultimate location of the item and ALSO whether it can be manoeuvred through doors and hallways to get to its destination. If you have narrow doorways or a staircase with tight corners, please be sure to check again and get in touch with us if there's a problem.
